Personality assessments like the ‘Cube Personality Test’ are a fun way to guide your mind and reflect upon what your truest wishes are.

What is a Personality Test?

Personality tests were created to help psychologically categorize one’s personality traits, behaviors, and motivations. The purpose behind these categorizations is to showcase how one perceives the world and cares to interact with it.

There are two common types of personality tests:

  • Objective Tests: Tests such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) or The Love Language Quiz are objective as they rely on self-indicated answers.
  • Projective Tests: Tests such as the Rorschach Inkblot Test (or the Cube Personality Assessment you’re about to read more on), are projective because their reflections and answers are based on unconscious thoughts.

It’s important to note that personality tests are psychological tools and are often more reflective guides and practices rather than anything prescriptive.

What is the Cube Personality Test?

The Cube Personality Test is a projective visualization test that was created in the late 90s by author Isamu Saito and psychologist Tadahiko Nagao. This test was originally written about in the Kokology book series that coincided with a Japanese philosophical movement at the time. The Kokology cultural movement is linked to the procurement of various psychological visualizations that help people unlock profound insights about themselves— their fears, their goals, their relationships, etc.

Later on, international writer Annie Gottlieb brought certain visualizations, such as the Cube Personality Test, to Western audiences through her book Secrets of the Cube.

The Cube Personality Test leads its test taker to imagine a series of objects and hone in on the specific qualities of the objects they imagine. After their visualizations end, they are led to an answer key that helps them to evaluate their projections and unlock deeper truths about their inner worlds.

Begin: Cube Personality Test

Before you begin, it’s important to mention that this test has no right or wrong answers. Please interpret the prompts as you see fit and let your imagination wander.

Step 1:

In order to begin, close your eyes and picture you’re in a vast, open desert. Then, walk yourself through a series of objects, each appearing one after another:

  • Cube
  • Ladder
  • Horse
  • Storm
  • Flowers

Step 2:

Now close your eyes again and evaluate the objects’ details more critically. Note your observations on the following questions:

  • Cube: How big is it? What is it made of? Where is it located in the field? Is it transparent? Is the cube on the ground or is it in the air, floating?
  • Ladder: How tall is the ladder? What is it made of? Where is the ladder in relation to the cube (nearby, far away, etc.)?
  • Horse: What color is the horse? What is the horse doing in the desert? Where is the horse in relation to the cube?
  • Storm: What does the storm look like? Is the storm going to last a while or just pass over? Where is the storm in relation to the cube?
  • Flowers: What color are the flowers? How many flowers are there? What kind of flowers are they? Where are they located in the desert and in relation to your cube?

Step 3:

After noting your observations to the questions above, walk yourself through the answer key below. Reflect on what each object symbolizes and what your visualization of them signifies for your unique personality.

Answer Key: Cube Personality Test

Cube

The cube you visualized represents yourself— your ego, sense of identity, and current self-perception.

  • Size: Represents your confidence and presence in the world (think large cube = boisterous, confident, loud, whereas small cube = soft spoken, introverted, shy).
  • Material & Transparency: Represents your emotional availability and openness (think steel cube = guarded and harder to reach, whereas glass cube = vulnerable and open). Also, how solid the cube seems can reflect your security in yourself.
  • Color: Represents your emotional tone (think optimism vs pessimism, etc.)
  • Position: Represents your inclination towards practicality or spontaneity/creativity (think cube on ground = logical and practical, whereas cube in air = creative spirit, more free-flowing).

Ladder

The ladder you visualized represents your dreams and goals, along with how you plan to achieve them.

  • Height: Represents the reach of your goals. Meaning a long ladder could signify high aspirations and lofty dreams, while a short one signifies more modest and accomplishable goals.
  • Material: Represents your emotional tone in relation to your goals. Meaning a metal ladder could represent one who is determined beyond doubt to fulfill their dreams, whereas a wooden, rickety ladder could represent one who is more flexible with their aspirations or uncertain of their path.
  • Location: Represents your ability to ask for help. If the ladder is leaning on or close to the cube, this signifies wanting to achieve your goals on your own, while a ladder far from the cube signifies your willingness to get a helping hand from others to achieve your dreams.
  • Rungs: Broken or missing rungs can represent that you perceive obstacles along the path to pursuing and achieving your dreams.

Horse

The horse you visualized represents your emotional desires and relationships (often romantic ones).

  • Color & Appearance: Represents your emotional nature in relationships and your openness to monogamy. A ‘color’ example could be a white horse being more calm in relationships, whereas a black horse being more mysterious. An ‘appearance’ example could be a bucking bronco representing someone who doesn’t care for monogamy and currently wants to roam free, while a gentle horse nibbling grass reflects one who is open to a relationship.
  • Activity: Represents your level of independence, e.g., a galloping horse indicates someone who isn’t afraid to run free and be self-motivated. Meanwhile, a horse that is saddled and still can showcase one who is more dependent on their loved ones, or may even be emotionally stagnant.
  • Location: Represents how important relationships are in your life. If the horse is close to the cube, relationships are central. If the horse is distant from the cube, relationships feel secondary or even hypothetically frightening to enter into.

It’s important that the horse can be interpreted in multiple ways. Meaning, it represents your romantic interests and relationships, but also how you care to give and receive love.

Storm

The storm you visualized represents your fears (internal conflicts) and struggles (external challenges).

  • Appearance: Represents the depth of your fears. The more threatening the storm appears, the deeper-rooted your fears are, whereas a light rainstorm may indicate occasional passing worries or concerns. If you see a rainbow, this indicates hope for the future and emotional recovery.
  • Duration: Represents the level of emotional turmoil you’re in. The longer the storm is projected to last, the deeper the turmoil feels. Meaning if it’s a quick shower, your stress and fear are fleeting emotions, whereas if the storm is long-lasting and heavy, your stress and fear are more consistent and far-reaching.
  • Location: Represents how proximal you are to the turmoil in your life. If the storm is far away, you may recognize certain stressors or fears, but are not presently experiencing them. If the storm is over you, you may be currently in the weeds of some emotional distress.

Flowers

The flowers you visualized represent where you find joy and connection in your life.

  • Appearance: The color and type of flower represent your emotional nature when it comes to connection. Vibrant flowers often symbolize extrovertedness and openness to friendship, whereas thorny or wilted flowers may signal that your walls are up. The health of the flowers and their coloring may also signify how nurtured you feel by the relationships in your life.
  • Quantity: The amount of flowers you see represents how large you like your social circle to be. The larger the field of flowers, the more people you enjoy connecting with; meanwhile, one flower or a small patch of flowers indicates you enjoy a more intimate circle of friends.
  • Location: Where the flowers are in relation to the cube represents your natural inclination toward introvertedness or extrovertedness to feel restoration and joy in your life. Meaning, if the flowers are close to the cube, your social circle is important to keeping your vitality and happiness up; you’re more extroverted. If the flowers are far from the cube, you prefer more time alone in order to rejuvenate your senses and feel happy.

Reflection

While this test is fun to take and reflect on, it’s good to remember that its accuracy varies and there are hundreds of ways to interpret your answers.

Rely on it as a fun reflective tool to address your current emotional landscape. Using each object as a prompt to further reflect or visualize your emotions can take this test a step further and help you unlock how you’re truly feeling in your life lately! All in all, have fun with it, don’t take it too seriously, and allow your interpretations to ebb and flow according to what feels right in your heart and gut.

Why do I care so much about reading? And the more I reflected on that question, the more I was met with answers (personal and otherwise).

So, why should you read? Here are my five reasons.

#1: Reading creates moments of pause throughout our day.

Our days are filled with screens. We work all day long on laptops, monitors, phones, tablets, etc., that bewitch us with their blue light. In seconds, we can be online shopping, then formatting a spreadsheet, then texting our friends (you get the gist).

But with books, we are many steps removed from our virtual world. We are connected to something tactical that we can flip through and enjoy at the rate we want to enjoy it. There are no texts popping up to disrupt our thoughts or emails pinging through on the side; we are just here— sitting, reading, wading through another world.

#2: Reading connects us across miles, divides, and lifetimes.

I recently finished the book Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (which is seriously one of the most incredible books I’ve ever read). This story took me a step beyond my reality, connecting me with a young man in Virginia’s rural Appalachia who struggles with poverty, foster care, drug addiction, loss, and so much more. And despite our differences, I become so enraptured with his world and captivated by his strength. In an interview with Oprah, Kingsolver speaks to how she created a character that was so specific but connected with folks worldwide, and that got me thinking about how powerful stories are.

No matter who we are, where we come from, or what lifetime we’re born in, we can pick up a book and connect. There are so many authors I’ve grown to love and characters I’ve fallen for that speak to the smallest and largest parts of me (but exist nowhere near me). We read books from centuries ago and find they are still timeless. We read stories about folks entirely different from us and learn from them, love them, and connect with them all the same. It’s phenomenal, and it’s all the more reason to read! To expand your horizons, gain new perspectives, and find stories that speak to you.

#3: Reading nourishes our minds and imaginations.

As we get older, we tend to use our imagination less and less. As a little girl, I decorated garages with flowers to make it my ‘home’ and played with Barbies until the wee hours of the morning at sleepovers. And while I struggle now to create those vibrant worlds I stepped into as a child, reading still provides me with a way to stretch my imagination and play.

Reading is an opportunity to exercise your mind, teach it new things, and expand your creativity for as long as you live.

#4: Reading curates community.

There is nothing more exciting than talking about books I adore with people who also adore them. Reeling over the unexpected twists and turns, getting emotional over the book’s big heartbreak, hating the villain, and so much more.

But aside from the dialogue books create amongst us, are the opportunities they provide for us to gather and connect in person (remember those book clubs I mentioned?). Recently, one of my favorite authors, Lily King, was coming to town to talk about her recent release, Heart the Lover.

One of my close friends who recently had a baby absolutely adores her as well, and luckily, we were able to meet up and listen to King speak. It was a night filled with laughter, adoration, and reconnection that completely filled my heart. And it never would’ve happened without books.

There is no friend as loyal as a book.

#5: Reading helps us escape our world… and enter a new one.

We all know how tense and disheartening our world can be, especially right now. And the best thing about reading is that it allows us to escape. There are millions of books to choose from every day, and each one holds the ability to transport us from our current reality into an entirely new one. It’s magical.

You can be a bit too isolated sometimes. While self-care and alone time are incredibly valuable, seeing 1331 is a sign from your angels that it’s time to reconnect with your community. Your friends adore you and your angels are reassuring you of that. Get out and connect with the people you love if you want to find a path of luck in your future.

May – 333

333 is a sign from your angels to tap into your creativity in order to find a renewed sense of peace. Truth be told, when this happens to me, I most likely will end up putting it on and watching it before bed. They may technically be “children’s movies” but some of them still make me laugh like they did when I was little or pull at my heartstrings when things get rough for the characters. So take a minute, get your nostalgia on, and scroll through the 12 movies listed below that you may have forgotten about but will definitely remember. Maybe even watch some of the videos and re-live the warmth that these characters embodied through their humor and their hearts. No matter how old I get, these movies still hold the ability to move me.

1. Monster’s Inc. (2001)

In my opinion, one of the most creative children’s movies is none other than Monsters Inc. Sully and Mike’s hilarious banter throughout the duration of the film is bound to crack you up. Then Boo comes along, sparking a fatherly love in Sully’s heart while wooing every viewer. Not to mention, Mike’s positive stream of positivity and gratitude, even when he gets gypped in every Monster’s Inc. advertisement, is inspiring and contagious. An all around great film, check out the ending scene below that will bring up all your forgotten feels.

2. The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)

An underrated movie that still never fails to make me laugh is The Emperor’s New Groove. Kronk’s tenderness, Yzma’s diabolical plans, Kuzco’s cockiness, Pacha’s bluntness, and many others in between, the whole crew makes for a great film. Their dynamic evokes non-stop laughter, all while being entangled in a certain sweetness that for sure made me list this as one of my faves. Check out some of the funniest scenes below:

3. Finding Nemo (2003)

Finding Nemo, a Pixar classic, is one that’ll put you through a whirlwind of emotions. Whether it’s laughing at Dory’s jokes, rooting for Nemo, feeling sad for Marlin, etc. this movie will make you laugh like no tomorrow while drawing out your empathetic side. Fictional or not, we were on this journey with them, okay! Watch the funny scene below, bringing you back to the adventure:

4. A Bug’s Life (1998)

A movie that often gets left behind is A Bug’s Life. Remember Flik and the gang? They rose to the challenge of changing the lives of bugs that were oppressed by the grasshoppers. With many hilarious bits woven in, this movie imparts a beautiful message about unity and equality. Watch the movie’s “bloopers” below for a good laugh:

5. The Incredibles (2004)

The Incredibles was the superhero movie that tied many witty cracks into an overarching theme about family and being there for one another. The scene below is from the start of the movie when Dash gets in trouble at school. His teacher is a trip!

6. Shrek (2001)

Shrek and Donkey’s relationship in ‘Shrek‘ is filled with sarcasm and wise cracks in the beginning. But quite a few chuckles later, at the end of the movie, they’ve become buddies and won over your heart. Watch this scene below when they were welcomed to Farquad’s castle:

7. Brother Bear (2003)

Another movie that will have you tearing up at the end is Brother Bear. A great story about loss, love, and friendship, this movie will have you laughing at one moment and saying “aw” at the next. Watch this sweet scene below from the end of the movie:

8. Lilo & Stitch (2002)

A tale of unlikely friends, Lilo & Stitch is bound to win you over from the beginning. Lilo’s melodramatic personality and Stitch’s literal out-of-this-world weirdness is a combo to make you laugh out loud. But the bond that grows between them is what makes this film even sweeter. 9. The Rugrats Movie (1998)

A major throwback, The Rugrats Movie is a surefire way to spark some nostalgia. Despite their age, these toddlers were hilarious in their time and deeply explored the theme of friendship. 10. Toy Story (1995)

Another classic Pixar film is Toy Story. Filled with the childhood enchantment of talking toys who go on adventures, this animated movie will rope you in, connecting you to its characters through both their comical and heartfelt moments.

Who could forget Scrat? This famous squirrel from the movie Ice Age left us excited for the movie after reels of laughter and smiles. It’s important to mention that my mother is not (and never has been) a reader. But reading was a hobby she always longed for, so she worked to instill it in me– and luckily, it worked. 

Late at night, I remember turning on my bedside lamp decorated with flowers and reading The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner until I was sure I was walking alongside them; living in old train cars and traveling beside shallow streams. As an only child, reading let me enter a new world full of friends, adventures, and destinations by merely turning page after page. I tore through any “Magic Treehouse” book and classics gifted by my grandparents like Little House on the Prairie, eager to uncover what was possible in this world and stretch my imagination beyond my bedroom. 

Reading also led me to uncover what I now feel is my life’s purpose– writing.

Building the bookshelf in my room with wildly creative works like The Tale of Desperaux, Goosebumps, and so many more, made me eager to add my own books alongside them. My mom still has a copy of the short book I wrote and illustrated about a dog when I was about eight or so alongside many poems, essays, and short stories I poured my heart and soul into. This fervor for storytelling only persisted as I got older, evolving time and time again throughout the years.

Throughout my teens, I read countless YA romance novels and apocalypse stories. Sarah Dessen was my favorite writer, hands down, and I still read her books to this day because they unlock a profound sense of nostalgia for a younger me. The thirteen-year-old Katee, who was grappling with growing up; learning to love her reflection despite the acne and braces; wanting to kiss a boy so she could feel wanted and alive; pulling her shirts up a bit above the waistline of her jeans to show a little skin and testing eyeliner looked on her lids to feel bolder, sexier, and older somehow. 

Dessen’s books also conveyed an important lesson that I always loved and admired: things don’t always work out. Her stories usually captured a troubled teen of some sort and depicted a young love that didn’t pan out because life got in the way. Even as a child, I shared strong friendships with the adults in my life and grew up quicker than most. I knew about any turbulence in my family or most tragedies in the world around me from a very young age. Seeing what I knew as reality reflected in Dessen’s writing made me feel a part of something much larger; it made me feel understood.

This sense of understanding between my world and the worlds portrayed in the stories I read is what encouraged me to become a writer myself– yearning for new ways to make others feel seen, heard, understood. So, when I went to college, I decided to study English and Spanish to pursue language as a career path.

It was in college that I really began to push the bounds of my reading and writing. During those four years, books became teachers and I claimed poetry as my preferred writing genre. 

To me, poetry has always felt so fluid, vulnerable, and raw– evoking truths about our world and own existence that are conveyed in such concise, visceral ways. I was captivated by it and motivated to write it successfully, so I dove into learning its varied art form. I tore through new books– poetry collections by Ocean Vuong, Nicole Sealey, and Eduardo Corral. Not to mention, memoirs by Kiese Laymon and Jesmyn Ward that wrote the stories of their life so purely and honestly that I was moved to tears. Even remembering their books now, I feel my breath catch in my lungs– captivated by their power and integrity. I wanted to write poems and stories the way these authors did. I wanted people to read my words and feel their world stop for a moment because I dared to share it all with them. 

When I pushed myself to write honestly and vulnerably, fully leaving my life on the page, my mind was unlocked to just how intimate storytelling is. You are sharing a chunk of your life, thoughts, imagination, with an audience who has every right to judge it how they please– that’s not an easy thing to accept. But it’s a fear I was determined to overcome because the beauty of sharing stories and connecting with people far and wide is far greater than any fear.

Leaving college, reading and writing became a sort of lifeline for me. Living at home with my mom during a global pandemic gave me many days to sit, think, read, and write. I wrote about the world around me: my past, my friends, my family, my feelings. I broke up with my boyfriend of three years, terminating a relationship riddled with toxicity and heartbreak and drama, making my world incredibly quiet. Every night, I read a chapter of Mari Andrew’s My Inner Sky to keep myself from texting him and remind myself that there is still so much left in the world to explore.  During my early twenties, reading and writing cured my restlessness and taught me healing. 

I read The Body Keeps the Score and went to therapy and learned to tackle trauma I never realized I was holding onto. The years that followed ebbed and flowed between easy and hard; stable and unnervingly chaotic. But throughout it all, reading and writing became a means of survival for me; a place where my thoughts could flow freely and I could process everything with writers near and far. 

My story with reading is long and winding. Books have been one of my greatest confidants– teaching me ways to pursue my passion, set my imagination free, heal my mind and body, and love the world around me no matter how tumultuous. Books are honest in a way no person can be. They have unlocked truths for me that have hit my heart harder than any advice loved ones have lent. 

I have over 470 notes on my phone dating back to 2015 when I was 16 years old. A decade of grocery lists, quotes that resonated, books to read, lines I wrote, lyrics stuck in my head, packing notes, and so much more. Here is a short list of some book quotes that have shaped me and continue to inspire me today:

I know the list of passages and books that have shaped me throughout my life is much, much longer than this list encapsulates because reading, for me, has been a 26-year love story that only continues to lengthen. Fueling my life with so much knowledge, reflection, and joy, it’s a pastime I’m so grateful for every day. 

Thank you, mom, for showing me the way toward what I now recognize as a lifeline, a teacher, and a lifelong friend.

In Season 2, Episode 13, John and Moira head out to dinner on their anniversary night when things get uncomfortable. Their old friends, along with Jocelyn and Roland, end up joining them for dinner, putting them in a tense confrontation between their old life and their current life. But after their old friends go on a barrage of rude comments about the town’s name that makes Roland and Jocelyn go silent, John takes a stand. Admirably, he tells the truth about his life and puts an end to the comments, saying, “…that town you passed through, it’s not called Shittsville, its called Shitt’s Creek, and its where we live.” He could’ve continued to fake it and not address the elephant in the room, but instead he stood up for the people that were there for him and admits they’re members of the town. After seeing the Rose family in such denial of their current state, this shocked me at first, but in a good way. It drew me into the show even more because they could’ve made John the typical stuck-up, washed-up character. But they didn’t, they made him honorable while relaying the message that you should always stand up for those that have stood up for you.

2. Sometimes, money can take away more than it can give.

Prior to living in Schitt’s Creek, the Rose family supposedly ‘had it all’ due to their endless stream of money. However, after they lost everything material, they gained back each other. In Season 3, Episode 12 their old, giant family portrait shows up at the motel because it didn’t end up being sold. Stevie catches John looking at it and reminiscing as he says,”The family often wasn’t all together back then, but I could look at this and there we were.” But Stevie’s response says it all, “Well, you guys are together like all the time now, so who needs this?” Yes, they may have lost their material wealth but that loss instigated the reunion of their family, making them richer than ever. Yes, it’s nice to have money, but it certainly isn’t everything.

3. Pursue your desires, even if they’re a little daunting and scary.

Multiple times throughout the show we watch as many characters go out on a limb and conquer a goal, even if it may seen lofty and unattainable. Alexis returns to high school and finishes her degree and then moves onto college. David took over the failed general store and turned it successful. Moira campaigned for and scored a position on the town council. The list goes on. But watching these characters strive for the next step in their walk of life, reiterated the lesson that it’s always good to follow your dreams. I don’t want to go to over-the-top with this classic cliche, but its true. Set goals for yourself. Whether they be small like deciding to run a mile everyday, reading a book, or large like buying a house, getting a promotion etc. Achieving those goals, big or small, seemingly easy or seemingly hard, is what keeps us moving forward on our journey. It makes us feel complete. And we need that.

4. Support the people you care about– whether they ask for it or not.

Achieving a goal is so rewarding, especially when you’re able to celebrate it with someone. The Rose’s dramatic attitudes and sassy remarks made me not want to watch the show at first, thinking that’s all it was going to amount to. But soon I came to find that each of them are more genuine than they first appear. Countless times throughout the show we watch the way they support each other. Subtle signs of support at times? Yes. Support along with sarcastic comments? Oh hell yes. But, support nonetheless. Like when David supports his mom and sings an old Christmas jingle with her on stage when she’s too afraid to do her one-woman play. Or when John goes into business with Stevie on the motel and, when Stevie gets scared, re-brands the sign to say, “Rosebud Motel”, a combination of their last names, to show they’re a team. Or how about when Alexis helps David get a partnership for his store even though it’s with Ted’s new girlfriend. I mean the list goes on and on, shining a light on what true friendship is: support. Whether our loved one asks for it or not.

5. There’s no shame in exploration.

A slightly raunchier lesson was instilled in Season 1, episode 10 with Stevie and David’s talk about “wine” after their first sexual encounter.

Stevie: “I only drink red wine, and up until last night, I was under the impression that you too only drink red wine, but i guess i was wrong?”

David: “I see where you’re going with this, um, I do drink red wine but I also drink white wine, and I’ve been known to sample the occasional Rose, and a couple summers back I tried a Merlot that used to be a Chardonnay which got a bit complicated…”

Stevie: “Okay, yeah, so you’re just really open to all wines.”

David: “I like the wine and not the label.”

In this scene David is entirely open and honest about his sexual exploration, and possible orientation of being pansexual, which I think is a topic that doesn’t get spoken about enough in today’s world. It’s okay to be curious. It’s okay to explore what you like. It’s okay to label things, not label things, not care about labeling things, etc. It’s your body and you’re free to express and use it in whatever way makes you feel good. Whether that means exploring as much as David has or simply exploring your body by yourself, you make the rules. Embrace who you are, what you like, and don’t be afraid to do so!

6. Be vulnerable.

On a less physical note, is the lesson that being vulnerable is being human. We all have emotions and crazy thoughts and weird reflections because of life and it’s encouraged to share those things with someone else because that is how we connect. That is how we build relationships with our partner, our friends, our family. Throughout Schitt’s Creek we see how many characters struggle with letting their walls down or asking for help when they need it. David was afraid to tell Patrick he loved him. Alexis thought Ted was too nice for her, drove him away, and then after falling in love with him, was afraid to tell him how she felt. Moira having multiple panic attacks and not wanting to admit her fears of becoming a washed up actress. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera, with more examples of how frightening it can be to let someone in, even if they’re someone as close as family. But, in the end, being vulnerable and sharing those moments with someone never makes you weak and trust me, you never come off as fragile as you feel.

What do you know? A comedic sitcom can have more laced into it than just the humor. And it’s those bits of real thread that kept me around, wanting more.
